Welcome to the Year 4 class page, where you will find everything you need to know about the year ahead.
Children will continue to enjoy a rich and well-rounded curriculum designed to deepen their understanding, develop key skills and nurture a lifelong love of learning. Our English curriculum follows a book-led approach, where children will read high quality texts to inspire creative writing. Throughout the year, we will study texts such as Journey, Charlotte’s Web and The Day War Came. In Mathematics, children will develop confidence with 4 digit numbers, fractions, decimals and data handling while deepening their understanding of the four key operations, shape and measure through our mastery approach. The children will also take part in the Mastering Number programme to strengthen their confidence and fluency with number. Developing fluency in times tables will also be a primary focus throughout Year Four to prepare the children for the National Multiplication Tables Check and so we will be doing numerous activities to help children recall these facts at pace.
This year, we will explore the world through our History and Geography topics, looking at the rise and fall of Benin, coastlines and the Anglo Saxons. In Science, we will be looking at a range of topics including Animals including humans, Electricity and States of Matter. Additionally, the children will continue to enjoy a broad curriculum with weekly lessons in Religious Education, Music, Science, Computing, PSHE, Spanish and PE, along with an Art and Design Technology unit taught each half term.
Pupils should continue to read regularly at home (a minimum of 5 times a week), and parents should sign reading diaries. Homework and will be set on Thursdays which you will hand in the following Tuesday. This homework will either be arithmetic or grammar based. Children will also be expected to practise their times tables on TT Rockstars which will be a priority in Year 4 and will be regularly assessed and checked. They will also be set spellings on a weekly basis these will be tested on Wednesdays. Spellings can be practised using www.spellingshed.com.
This year our PE days will be Monday and Wednesday. We will be focusing on a number of sports and skills including: hockey, netball and athletics. We are asking that pupils come into school in their PE kits on their PE days - this should be the Willow Tree green and purple official kit and trainers. In the winter, pupils can wear plain black jogging bottoms (over their PE kits to keep them warm). No football/rugby kits are allowed.
If you require any further information, please contact Miss Vickers.
Spelling
This year we will continue to use Spellingframe tool to support our spelling. Each child will continue to have a login to practice the statutory Year 4 words. These Logins will be found in your child's reading journal. Each week we will practice our spellings using the Ipads and will then test ourselves on the Friday. You to can help your child practice at home, to give them the best chance of achieving their best practice every day. Below is the statutory Y3/4 word list. It is expected that your child will be able to read and spell each of these words before enter Year 5.

PE is on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Reminder - Home reading is now being completed and logged using reading journals. This will be monitored and your child's book band will be changed each term following assessments. The expected standard in Year 4 is for your child to be a 'free reader', this means your child will read a book of their choice that challenges their comprehension skills. Please let me know if you have any issues with this. In addition, your child will read with an adult in school each week and this will be recorded using our reading journals. Reading is a key element of the GAIN award. We ask that your child reads atleast 3 times a week. This is the bare minimum!
A few reminders;
Spellings - spellings will be available to download. Please practice these daily. The children will practice the spellings and spelling rules through the week. They will be tested on their spellings each Friday using spelling frame.
Maths - Please continue to practice TTrockstars. Logins will be resent in the first few weeks of term. If you need a new login please let me know. Times tables are a massive part of Year 4 and require a great deal of practice.
Our priority is your child's happiness and well-being.
